FGW: Meet my new best friend…

It’s pretty rare that you find something you love enough to save up your lunch money for the next 4 months just to get it. It’s also rare that I would ever even THINK of recommending a product that’s got a high price tag. MBBers, meet rare:

Dr. Gary Goldfaden says his career in dermatology was sparked by a skin problem he experienced during his first year of medical school. With 30 years of practice in Florida, Dr. Goldfaden knows what we do; sun, toxins, and poor care generally have a horrible effect on our skin. When he set out to find his own ‘miracle ingredient’, he settled on red tea, thanks to the lovely skin of his rough living mother in law. Goldfaden isn’t the only line touting red tea’s benefits, and it may not even be the best…but man, it’s awesome.

I had the pleasure of trying out 3 Goldfaden products; Daily Scrub, Pure Power, and 3-in-1 Daily Moisturizer.  These items are a few of their “Daily Foundations”, which cover the skin care basics most of us use daily. Goldfaden also offers Daily Complexes, Intensive Treatments, and Daily Body-Care, with a little something for everyone.  A handy drop down menu displays products appropriate to your skin issues without jumping you all over the website.

As a huge fan of manual exfoliators, I wasn’t as impressed with the Daily Scrub as I’d hoped. I found it to be overly rough and gritty in texture, especially for something meant to be used every day. While it’s labeled as “best for dry, damaged, or distressed skin” I wouldn’t be recommending it to friends with distressed or sensitive skin. I scrub the heck out of my skin on a regular basis, and it was even a bit much for me. A basic exfoliator coupled with a $65.00 price tag puts this squarely in the ‘too pricey’ range for me.

The other two items I tried though…wow.

Pure Power ($85) is an antioxidant serum that does a little bit more. In addition to red tea, Pure Power contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component in skin. Hyaluronic Acid (also called hyaluronan) is involved in tissue repair. It’s important to note that excessive UVB exposure causes cells in the skin to decrease hyaluronan production and even begins to increase the rate of hyaluronan degradation, so renewing the hyaluronic acid in your skin is so important in fighting the effects of sun damage.  A fantastic serum for all skin types, this sank in almost instantly and left my skin smooth and comforted. It didn’t even feel like I was wearing anything and there was absolutely no increased oiliness from this product. I noted that the irritated blemishes on my face seemed to heal faster, and I thought I was imagining it until I began researching the ingredients*. I’m 100% sold on the comforting and healing powers of this serum.

Dr. Goldfaden’s 3-in1 Daily Moisturizer ($65) truly stands out amongst its peers. This oil free moisturizing lotion is almost more of a liquid and is incredibly light. More red tea and hyaluronic acid, as well as seaweed extract. Clearly this combination of ingredients was well thought out. I was skeptical as to how well such a light lotion could hydrate but I quickly discovered that there’s a reason I only do this in an amateur capacity. A small amount of lotion goes a long way and leaves me with quenched skin all day long. BUT, it does so without leaving a greasy or slick layer of product on my skin. I have never in my life discovered a moisturizer that does so much and feels like so little.

After weeks of using these products I am starting to wonder how I can live without them. Though they are expensive they aren’t the MOST expensive thing out there, and since it takes such a reasonable amount to feel results your dollar will get adequately stretched. If had the income to regularly purchase this, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so. As it is, I may just save up and treat myself to this for special occasions, like Mondays. My skin is as soft as my baby daughter’s and it feels fabulous. It has been a long time since I walked around all day without thinking about my skin. These products are so light and effective that my skin simply doesn’t cross my mind throughout the day.  It’s amazing how much more fun skin care is when you aren’t feeling greasy OR itchy!

*I don’t poke around for info until AFTER I’ve had a chance to really use a product and formulate an opinion. I wouldn’t want to be swayed by what I read and I believe you deserve the best, most honest reviews I can give you! XOXO, Mo

FGW: Just in time for Cosmedicine’s special deal

I know skincare is usually Jen’s territory, but with a deal as good as 50% off I just had to seize my opening. Besides, great skin is truly the foundation to great makeup, so I think it’s totally appropriate. If I’m not back next week I guess that means Jen doesn’t agree 😉

One of the items in the Sun Care Kit I bought from Sephora was Cosmedicine’s Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion. I have oily skin that is blemish prone, and I’m getting older, so I want something that can keep my skin clear, balanced, and help fight some of the outside factors that contribute to aging. Since I was so happy with the Medi-Matte, I picked up a First Measures ll For Oily to Oily/Combination Skin set at Sephora and took it for a spin. I couldn’t find the set on the Cosmedicine website, but it’s currently only $24 at Sephora, so it’s worth the jaunt to a store or a quick hop to

The set contains 5 deluxe sample sized items: Healthy Cleanse Clarifying Cleanser & Toner-In-One, MegaDose Skin Fortifying Serum, Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion (SPF 20), Opti-mologist Eye Cream with Light Diffusers, and Medi-morphosis Self Adjusting Exfoliator.

The Cleanser/Toner takes a little getting used to. Think of those hand soap pumps that dispense foam instead of just liquid soap and you’ve got an idea of what it’s like. It was quite a change for someone used to thick creamy cleansers, and I was skeptical, but it cleared away my makeup and left my skin nice and clean. The light feeling is really nice once you get used to it, though the smell is rather unpleasant. At least I know they’re not adding a bunch of unnecessary fragrances to their product, right? $35 for the full size product puts it well within the average price range, and once you stop overcompensating by pumping too much (guilty as charged) you’ll see that it really goes a long way.

The Medi-morphosis exfoliator is a bit grittier than I’m used to, but it works since the particles are much smaller than usual as well. I was really impressed with the even distribution of particles as I massaged my face, since usually everything will bunch up in one spot or another. It was surprisingly gentle, and even sensitive skin would love it, though if you are used to a more aggressive exfoliator you may want to use it 3 times a week instead of 2. At $42 for a full size tube, I find this a little on the pricey size for an exfoliator.

I’m not usually a proponent of eye creams, but since none of the other included items fit the bill as something I’d want to smear on my eyes, I gave the Opti-mologist Eye Cream a shot. I was really worried that it would leave me with greasy, shiny eyes, but it was a great product for my skin type. Just enough moisture so my eyes didn’t look crinkly, but it thoroughly absorbed quickly and left smooth skin that my concealer easily adhered to. $45 dollars for the tube is pretty average for an eye cream, but unless you really feel like you need the extra oomph, you could probably lose this product.

Next up, MegaDose Skin Fortifying Serum. At $80, this is the real make or break product. Treatments and serums cost more because we expect them to do more, and with discoveries in ingredients and nano delivery systems, there’s no reason they shouldn’t. One of the things I really appreciated about this line is that it really focuses on prevention rather than just treatment, and MegaDose is no exception. Packed with antioxidants like Pomegranate and Vitamin C, as well as Dimethicone, which helps keep nasty stuff out and moisture in, MegaDose is a solid skin protector with extracts to help boost collagen. The feel is initially something like a good primer, but after a few minutes it’s absorbed and leaves a soft, smooth feeling. I appreciate that it isn’t overly heavy or greasy feeling, and I honestly feel the Medi-Matte performed better over this serum than on its own. Again, the scent isn’t great, but I’m willing to let that slide because it disappears quickly. The price is hefty, however, just a dab will do ya with this, and if you have the coin I recommend giving it a try.

The last product (and my favorite of the 5) is the Medi-Matte lotion. A thick feeling lotion, it can be smoothed on quite lightly and a pea sized amount will cover most of your face easily. It gives an extra layer of smoothing, and I’ve taken to skipping my primer altogether while I’ve been using this set. While my initial reaction to such a thick lotion would be to cringe and imagine zits aplenty later, this lotion proves that my immediate reaction isn’t always correct. Even when my skin does start to get a bit of shine, the Medi-Matte helps to keep everything in place and my perfectly applied face doesn’t slip off.

In my search for a new skincare regimen, this has been a delightful find. My skin feels a lot more balanced and the blemishes have been at a minimum. I felt like a little moisture was missing right when everything was applied, though my skin didn’t end up overcompensating with oil production so it can’t really be too bad. It was a pleasure to see a skincare line that realizes it’s not necessary to dry out oily skin and I’ve really liked what these products have to offer. Also available are collections for normal and dry skin types, so don’t feel left out if your skin isn’t oily. If you have experience with the other collections than please let us know how you liked them!!

Holy Cow, 50% off at Cosmedicine!

My first day in Vegas, and I have already stopped by the Sephora this morning.   My two favorite Cosmedicine products are their Honest Face Foaming Cleanser, which is a cleanser/toner that also removes face and eye make-up for all skin types, and Medi-Matte Tint and Oil Control Lotion, which both Mo and I have raved about in our reviews.

The Cosmedicine Rep at Sephora introduced me to one of their newest products:

Cosmedicine’s Instant Wrinkle Write Off Line Filler ($25):

Crow’s feet? Frownies? Laugh and expression lines? Write them off instantly with this quick-fix pen. The amazing, lightweight formula temporarily erases fine lines and wrinkles without needles or painful procedures. Dries in seconds to create a smoother, younger-looking, wrinkle-free appearance.

I used a bit around my eyes and on that little crease between my eyebrows.  The Instant Filler did a nice job softening and filling in my fine lines and for only $25!  Great product Cosmedicine!

Here is some great news!   Cosmedicine just re-launched their web site and are offering a killer promotion.  Enter COSLNH to get 50% off your purchase.  One piece or twelve – the discount applies to your total purchase amount.  It’s limited time only though – just to promote the launch (expect it to last two weeks or so).

Mythbuster Beauty Review: Baby Quasar and Baby Blue

Warning! The photo rejuvenation devices I am about to review are expensive! You may be better off being blissfully unaware of these rather awesome devices. I give you this warning because once you read about what the Baby Quasar and Baby Blue Photo Light Devices can and do for your skin; you will covet them until you finally own them!

What are the devices: Photo Rejuvenation and Acne Clearing Devices

How they work: The Baby Quasar (or BabyQ, as it’s affectionately called) is designed to deliver four light wavelengths (that is amber, red and infrared). The Baby Blue delivers only blue light. This is a picture of the Baby Quasar. The Baby Blue looks exactly the same, but emits a blue light.

What the devices do:   By following a series of photo rejuvenation sessions for six weeks, the Baby Quasar can enhance the skin cells’ circulation, stimulating collagen production and healing. The Baby Blue emits a blue light that kills the p. acne bacteria. Used together, they can reduce the inflammation and redness associated with acne or sensitive skin. The red light causes the release of nitric oxide, which is essential for healing. These devices are meant to enhance and improve the effectiveness of your skincare serums and treatments. Light Therapy is best for individuals with sun damage, redness, broken blood vessels and brown discoloration, including freckles.

My experience:

I was told to start by using the Baby Blue device first followed by a Baby Quasar session for six weeks to achieve the maximum benefits. I used both devices every other day for six weeks and each session lasted for about 35 minutes.

Both devices were easy to use. The warmth from the light felt good against my skin and there was no pain involved. I found the light therapy sessions very soothing, especially after using the Baby Quasar. I noticed that my blemishes seemed to heal more quickly and the number of my breakouts diminished while using both devices. I generally used the Blue Light as a spot treatment on areas where I tend to break out (nose, cheeks and chin), and the red Baby Quasar over the entire face.

I noticed that the Baby Quasar significantly helped diminish my skin’s redness. It was very soothing to my skin. Over the six weeks, I noticed more firmness and softened lines around my eyes, mouth and forehead. My pigmentation issues have improved and are less noticeable on my cheeks and chin. On my cheeks, I noticed some very dramatic improvements including some pigmentation spots fading and completely vanishing.  I have been trying to clear up some very deep small whiteheads on the apples of my cheeks for years, and while using the BabyQ and Baby Blue, these small whiteheads have slowly been surfacing and disappearing!   I have also noticed diminished pore size around my cheeks, chin and nose.

In short, I loved the Baby Quasar. You are going to love what these devices can do for your skin!

You will need to avoid shining the light directly into your eyes or around mucous membranes. I did get a few strange sores after exposing my nostrils to the light. Other than that, I noticed no other side effects or adverse issues while using the Baby Quasar and the Baby Blue devices.

Where do you purchase, and how much:

The price of these devices is very high. The Baby Quasar costs $449 plus $20 s&h at the Baby Quasar site. However, if you look at the cost of going to an esthetician or clinic for Photo Rejuvenation Therapy or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) a series of five treatments can cost between $1,000 – $2,000. To have a device that can be used at your convenience and indefinitely, you can see how these devices can be a deal. The Baby Quasar devices have a one year warranty from the manufacturer, and the company provides excellent customer support. You can also share the devices with other family and friends.

Special Discount Code: Baby Quasar is offering a promotional code, ‘mythbeauty’ that will give you an additional 10% discount off any Baby Quasar device.

Conclusion: The improvements are subtle and take time, but I have noticed some real benefits while using the Baby Blue and Baby Quasar. I highly recommend using the Baby Quasar.

[Here is picture I took today with a bit of makeup, (but really not that much), and no touch-ups! My skin isn’t perfect, but not bad for a 39 year old mother of five.]

If you are serious about getting the most out of your skincare, purchasing the Baby Quasar would be definitely a step in the right direction. BabyQ really rocks!

FGW’s: Tarte’s Clean Slate Primer

A primer is like eye shadow base to me, not something you have to own, but once you add it to your cosmetics routine you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

I haven’t tried everything Tarte has to offer, but I am totally committed to their cheek stains so I jumped on the chance to try their Clean Slate face primer. In a market where many face primers are goopy, smelly, or heavy, Tarte really stands out. The silicone based (one feature I recommend from any primer) primer is loaded with all kinds of natural ingredients like avocado oil , safflower seed oil, and Echinacea, rosemary, and hibiscus extracts. You might expect an oily feel with this list of ingredients, but it’s quite the opposite.

The pea sized amount they recommend is surprisingly adequate; it covers everywhere I need it to. Thanks to the friendly ingredients it can even be used around the eyes, and while I wasn’t amazed with it as an eye shadow base I was very happy with the way it smoothed the small smile lines under my eyes. Unlike previous brands that were smoothing but were too tinted for my fair skin, Clean Slate applies perfectly clear, a definite bonus in my book since it can be used by absolutely anyone. Clean Slate offers a light feeling and silky smooth coverage, once it’s on you’d never know it was there. When you’ve already used a treatment serum, eye cream and a moisturizer, and still have foundation, concealer and cheek color to apply, an incredibly light primer is a must.

At $27 Clean Slate runs just a smidge under par for most primers. You may think that sounds like a lot for a primer, but since such a tiny amount goes so far this will last you quite a while. If you follow the directions then it isn’t outside the realm of possibility to only purchase this twice a year, or even less. As we enter the summer months when makeup tends to run, and as age starts to leave a few personality lines that we may not appreciate as much as we’re “supposed” to, products like Tarte’s Clean Slate really start to earn their keep. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me!!!

GOOD GRACIOUS, we almost forgot to mention!

To celebrate Earth Day, Tarte Cosmetics is offering 20% off of all purchases at their website.  To receive the 20% off discount, enter the Code: EARTH08 at checkout.  This offer is good until May 2, 2008.

Pumpkin Perfection: LooseLipsNY

My skin has suffered some sun damage and scarring due to breakouts. Last year I sought for help and advice from a good friend and Aesthetician Jannae. One product she used in her clinic was a Pumpkin Peel.

The Pumpkin Peel contains natural fruity acids that gently slough off dead layers of skin. Pumpkin is also very rich in antioxidants that nourish your skin. After one of these peels, my skin looked radiant and felt smooth and wonderful, although the price tag for her services were a bit steep.

A few months ago Sherry at LooseLipsNY, very kindly sent me free samples of all 3 of their signature skin products: (1) The Natural Pumpkin and Multi Fruit Complex Peel, (2) the Honey and Almond Scrub, and (3) the Soothing Chamomile Mask. I loved these three gems so much, I bought all three full size products and use this 3 step regimen once a week, and my skin has never looked better.

Sherry at LooseLipsNY just informed me that their Pumpkin Peel has been reformulated and works even better! After trying a sample, I noticed that it seems richer in its consistency and darker in color. Just don’t eat it!

The Pumpkin Peel smells just like Pumpkin Pie and works together with the Scrub. After using both, the Chamomile mask cools and soothes your skin. The LooseLipsNY system leaves your skin feeling like you just spent big bucks on a facial.

LooseLipsNY is having a Black Friday sale, you can use code black10 for 10% off only now through Cyber Monday November 26th!

Beyond skincare LooseLipsNY’s Holiday makeup is here:

They are carrying brand new lip glosses that look as good on as they do in their beautiful packaging. This glitter gloss is not gritty or sticky and comes in ruby slipper (hint of ruby red), enchanted (hint of peach shade), northern lights (silver shimmer) and ballerina (no glitter/light pink gloss with vanilla scent-yum!).

Perfect for your purse when going out on the town this season. Wear alone or over your favorite lipstick. A perfect gift or stocking stuffer!
