Holiday Hoopla: Just a Glorified Name for another Meme

December 23, 2007 at 9:07 am Leave a comment

This is a picture of our 4 year daughter Naomi at her preschool’s Holiday program. Because of all the snow we received, we were lucky to get there at all. She did a great job!

Jen from “Lords of the Manor” just tagged me for the Holiday Hoopla, so here goes…

1. List 12 random things about yourself that have to do with Christmas

2. Please refer to it as a ‘hoopla’ and not the dreaded ‘m’-word (Josi doesn’t even know what the m-word is but she’s trying really hard to think of all the dirty words that start with M that she’s ever heard. Tristi thinks the “m” word is Meme.)

3. You have to specifically tag people when you’re done. None of this “if you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged” stuff is allowed…then nobody ends up actually doing it. The number of people who you tag is really up to you — but the more, the merrier to get this ‘hoopla’ circulating through the blogosphere.

4. Please try and do it as quickly as possible. The Christmas season will be over before we know it and I’d like to get as many people involved as possible.

As a child…

1. I absolutely believed in Santa Claus. But sitting on his lap really terrified me. I have several pictures of me crying on his lap.

2. Early in the morning, I would sneak into the living room and plug in the Christmas tree lights. Several times I remember shocking myself doing this. Ouch!

3. At our local College Mall, there was a kiosk where you could purchase a fancy red stocking and get your name written in glue and coated with glitter. I always wanted one of these fancy “store bought” stockings, but we always used my Dad’s wool socks for our Christmas stockings.

4. There was only one flavor of candy cane, Peppermint!

5. When I was about 6 years old, on Christmas Eve I decided to stay awake in my bed as long as I could. I swear to this day, that I saw Santa’s sleigh in the distance up in the clear, starry night sky and could hear jingle bells. 6. The Charlie Brown Christmas Special was my absolute favorite Christmas cartoon, with the original cartoon version of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” in close second. (Now my kids think that Jim Carrey’s Grinch is the original one! Bah!)

As a Teen: 7. One Christmas, my 16 year old friend Evan gave me a small wooden figurine of a “Leopard Toad” and a box of thin mints for Christmas. No wonder I ended up marrying him!

8. My parents divorced when I was 14 years old, and after they split, Christmas time was more depressing because I had to spend time with both parents individually, and not all together as a family.

9. One year was asked to play the cello for the Pachebel Christmas Canon in a Church Quartet performance.

As an “adult”:

10. I love to attend sing along performances of Handel’s Messiah. I am an alto and my favorite selection from the Messiah is:

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd” Isaiah 40:11

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; and he shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Matthew 11:28, 29 28. Come unto [Him], all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and [He shall] give you rest. 29. Take [his] yoke upon you, and learn of [Him]; for [he is] meek and lowly of heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

11. On Christmas Day 1993, our first daughter Amanda was born in Provo, Utah

12. Three years later, on Christmas Eve 1996, our second daughter Lorinda, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. I would like to thank Jen for passing on this m— I mean “Hoopla” to me. Please Mo and Real World Martha, would you honor us with your own random Christmas Memories?May many new wonderful memories be created this year and always!
