The Balm Contest for November: “What are You Truly Thankful For?”

Today is the last day to enter The Balm‘s Contest for November:

“What Are You Truly Thankful For?”

Marissa Shipman (The Balm’s Founder and CEO) and Carly agreed to sponsor the November contest. I have mentioned their cosmetic products before, such as my favorite concealer timeBalm anti-aging concealer. Their Plump your Pucker lip gloss is one of the best lip glosses/plumpers on the market. The Balm wants to award this month’s winner with some of their fabulous cosmetics.

When I think of gratitude, I cannot help but compare my life with the life of those that have lived before me. In this picture of the “The Gleaners,” by Millet, I am reminded of the hard work and preparation that had to take place before the harvest. This harvest was such an integral and essential part of life. It still is, but we are far removed from the harvesting process anymore. Harvest time has taken on an entirely new meaning: racing here, buying this, decorating with seasonal trinkets, raking leaves, thinking about weather or not the furnace will last through the winter… It is for this reason I was so pleased by the entries of this month’s “Truly Thankful” contest.I was incredibly touched and reminded of the simple gifts that we all are privileged to have, particularly our freedom to express those ideas.

Take a moment to read the entries from the the Truly Thankfulcontest post.

Real World Martha:

Hi Jen, I would like to share how thankful I am for the freedom of religion. I am so thankful someone doesn’t tell me i can’t or here’s how. I can go to my place of worship and don’t have the threat of being killed.Debbie aka The Real World Martha 🙂

Mo Mommy:

(This is long and kind of sappy, bear with me)This was such a lovely topic because it really got me thinking. I mean, I’m thankful for a place to live and for food and for that great Other Mothers where I can buy my kids nice clothes without going broke :), but what is the ONE thing I’m most thankful for? It really gave me some thought…So I decided, it’s people. I have had the opportunity so many times to be on the receiving end of enormous acts of charity and love from truly generous and wonderful people. It may not make everything better, but it sure helps the way I deal with things. I’m married to a person who would do anything I asked of him, and who gave me the three most important persons I know, my kids. I have friends who put down whatever they are doing when they are needed, and who risk baring their soft underbellies to truly connect with others. Friends who have been hurt by the world or by other people but who still believe in the power of love. I have met men and women who take what life hands them and just keep going, people who have taught me so much about what being a wife, especially a military wife, means. I have seen beautiful tender moments from afar, and I have seen them up close as well. I am so thankful for the people who looked beyond my appearance and helped me in my long journey to Christ and the temple. Honestly, what is this world without other people? I couldn’t be more blessed than to be surrounded by the people I am, they make it all worth it.

Cat Jackson:

I feel thankful for a lot of things (family, friends, husband, health, etc.), but I think the BIGGEST thing I’m thankful for is my life.I’m thankful that I’ve been able to experience this planet for the many years I’ve been given, and that I (hopefully) still have many more years left to continue experiencing it.I’m thankful that I’ve been given the ability to wake up each morning and choose how I’m going to live my day, and I’m thankful that I’ve been given the strength and peace of mind to really ENJOY my days.Woo! Yay life!

Jeannine J9:

I am so thankful for my friends and family, and the ability to truly appreciate them and all the blessings that life offers, especially the simple gifts that surround us. I am grateful for the ability to dance and love life, to serve and have purpose, to hope, to have choices, and to dream beyond the known and believe those dreams can come true.Thank you for reminding me of all that I have to be thankful for. Here is a poem that reminds me of the spirit of Thanksgiving:A Potted Plant-Hafiz (Translated by Daniel Ladinsky)I pull a sun from my coin purse each day.And at night I let my pet the moonRun freely into the sky meadow. If I whistled,She would turn her head and look at me.If I then waved my arms,She would come back wagging a marvelous tailOf stars. There are always a few men like meIn this worldWho are house-sitting for God.We share His royal duties:I water each day a favorite potted plantOf His–This earth.Ask the Friend for love.Ask Him again. For I have learned that every heart will getWhat it prays forMost.

Nevin:

I have many things to be thankful for: family, health, friends, food….but I am most thankful for the opportunities and chances I receive everyday that I wake up. Every moment I’m given is another chance to fulfill my dreams, to make life better, not just for me, but for others. Sure, sometimes I lose sight of that because life isn’t always easy. But then I watch the news, or read an article about the horrible atrocities others are living through, and I’m quickly reminded of just how lucky I really am.Thanks for the giveaway!

This is a test to see if I calculated my time zone correctly. I think I was off 7 hours, no wonder Marcia got confused!
